What To Wear To The Races
Dressing up for the races is a tradition that will never grow old, especially when the stakes are high for the “Best Dressed” contest for the Mr Green Ladies & Gents Evening at Chester Races on 13 July. It can be a difficult decision on how to wear an eye-catching outfit at the horses, but thankfully, I am here to explain how to maximise your chances of winning the “Best Dressed” contest on the day.
Do Your Homework
Racecourses can have a specific dress code, and with that said, sometimes even a different dress code for each individual event – ensure that you check this before deciding on your outfit. Once you’ve established the dress code, seek inspiration online from all the various methods. This may include Pinterest, your favourite fashion bloggers, and relevant hashtags – after all we live in the modern world of sharing on social media. Finally, in true British spirit, check the weather forecast!
Don’t Try Too Hard
I’m all for standing out but please don’t try too hard – people will see it a mile off. I would opt for a classy look with a twist. For example, take a classic piece like a double-breasted blazer in a bold colour such as burgundy, forest green or a punchy royal blue. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the summer trends with a suit in lighter shades of pink, beige or mint green. Whatever you decide on, remember that at the races there is no such thing as being overdressed – take this opportunity to really step up your style. Details, Details, Details
Consider the suit as the cake and the details as the icing! Don’t go through all that trouble of finding the perfect suiting combination and overlooking the finer details. What do I mean by details?
Tie: One of the most central pieces to complete a look, especially if you are to win the “Best Dressed” contest. I generally tend to go for very classic patterns/shades when it comes to ties. For the races, your tie is a reflection of your personality. It’s a good opportunity to get creative and playful – nothing tacky though.
Pocket Square: If you opt for a bold coloured suit jacket as mentioned above, I would go for something neutral for the pocket square. There is no need to match to your tie, just make sure it compliments your overall look.
Polish Your Shoes: They say your shoes tell a lot about a man. Make sure it speaks volumes about your attention to detail like a true gentleman.
Eyewear: If its a sunny day, take a pair of sunglasses which will add to the look and will not only make you look like the best dressed but also the coolest guy at a traditional event.
Be Yourself
No clothes in the world are going to look great on you, if you look uncomfortable in them. So find something that fits well, and if required get the necessary alterations done for the perfect fit. Your outfit will be a reflection of your personality so put your touches on it and most of all enjoy the day.
